Chef Sara Corpening Whiteford and Mary Corpeninig Barber


Identical twins Mary Corpening Barber and Sara Corpening Whiteford are the owners of Thymes Two, Inc., a San Francisco based food consulting and cookbook authoring partnership. Thymes Two was originally founded as a home for their thriving San Francisco catering business, and has since evolved into the home base for Mary and Sara’s culinary consulting and writing pursuits. With over 30 years of combined experience in restaurants and catering, Mary and Sara cook and entertain with great artistic vision.

North Carolina natives, Mary and Sara have been cooking together since they were five years old. Their passion for food led them to Peter Kump’s Culinary School in New York (now called The Institute of Culinary Education), followed by stints at La Varenne in Joigny, France, and in 4-star restaurant kitchens. Mary and Sara have (individually) worked in some of the nation’s most celebrated restaurants, including New York’s Montrachet, The Quilted Giraffe, Tribecca Grill, March, and San Francisco’s Aqua.

Mary and Sara’s culinary talents and sense of humor have been showcased on NBC’s Today Show, Live with Regis, San Francisco’s Bay Café, Napa Style with Michael Chiarello, and the Food Network’s Cooking Live Primetime with Sara Moulton, and have broadened their reach to the online world, by participating with Their business has also extended to include satellite media tours for Williams-Sonoma, and they have positioned themselves as spokeswomen for Hellman’s, Best Foods, Kikkoman and Circulon Cookware in television, radio, and print campaigns.

Authors of 7 cookbooks, with over a million books sold, (Smoothies, Wraps, Simplify Entertaining, Cocktail Food, Super Smoothies, and Skewer it! and Bride & Groom’s First and Forever Cookbook), Mary and Sara have also been selected to contribute recipes in Today’s Kitchen: America’s Favorite Chefs and Recipes(the highly anticipated NBC news authorized cookbook due out in Fall, 2005).

Mary and Sara have authored numerous articles and recipes for a wide variety of publications, including Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, American Home Style, Fine Cooking, Cooking Light, Victoria, and Health magazines. They have lent their culinary skills to the classroom, conducting cooking and catering demonstrations at many cooking schools and gourmet food shops throughout the country.

Thymes’ Two’s current focus is on cookbook writing and culinary consulting. Mary and Sara are presently at work, on the concept for their eighth cookbook. Their involvement as consultants for hot new restaurant concepts(Otis in San Francisco and Dlush in San Diego) is growing as well.
